President & CEO

The Opportunity

HwH is seeking a passionate and committed President & CEO (“CEO”) who will be responsible for carrying out its mission, programs, administration, and financial objectives. The CEO of HwH is the management leader of the organization and reports directly to the board of directors. The CEO will bring transparency, vision, and hands-on leadership to all areas of HwH operations, and will lead the development and implementation of strategies to ensure the operational and financial health of the organization.

An Effective Executive

The CEO will be a confident, hands-on leader with a track record of success in organizational management, including deep managerial and operational expertise. This leader will have an abiding commitment to a diverse and inclusive team environment, one that can establish priorities, goals, and timelines to achieve quantifiable and qualitative outcomes with limited staff support. The successful candidate will understand the importance of a robust partnership with the Board and staff, and will ensure fiduciary responsibility, sound financial management practices, and accountability while remaining creative and innovative. The CEO reports to the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of HwH, and is a non-voting member of the Board of Directors. The CEO will maintain ongoing relationships with all appropriate members of the Board of Directors and attend all Board meetings to present a status report of HwH operations. The CEO will directly supervise the Vice President & COO and all other headquarters staff, including but not limited to the Director of Resource Development, the Director of Finance & Comptroller, and the Director of Community Relations.

An Ambassador and Fundraiser

A high-energy, charismatic leader, the CEO will serve as an “ambassador” to the community for HwH. The CEO will have an executive and mission-driven presence and will be able to effectively articulate and convey the HwH mission and priorities to a wide range of constituents including donors, Board members, staff, clients, local and state government agencies, and community organizations. The CEO will also have familiarity with a wide range of fundraising channels, including individual, corporate, foundation, and government giving. The CEO will have an inspirational approach to building collaboration and buy-in, and generating support for the organization. This leader will supervise compelling cross-platform communications, including e-communications, direct email marketing messages, online experiences, and other content. The candidate will be skilled in leading the organization in its efforts to enhance strong brand recognition, and will connect, build bridges, and sustain excellent relationships with existing and potential partners, government agencies, and policy leaders. As the external voice of HwH, the CEO will possess excellent oral and written communication skills and be a confident public speaker.

Financial Performance and Viability

The CEO is responsible for ensuring that all HwH programs meet the requirements of a nonprofit organization in the State of Connecticut, including the establishment of effective working relationships with all appropriate federal, state, and local government agencies and human services providers.

The CEO will manage the annual budget within spending guidelines approved by the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors, and will make recommendations regarding the pay and benefits plan for all paid staff members based upon a comparison with nonprofit organizations of comparable size and scope. The CEO will ensure that an accurate and comprehensive bookkeeping system exists, including monthly balancing of bank accounts, and will oversee the preparation of monthly financial reports by the Finance Director for the Board of Directors. The CEO will maintain effective cost controls to ensure a positive cash flow of funds needed to manage ongoing programs and investment in new program development and staff additions.

A bachelor’s degree is required; an advanced degree is preferred.
